Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, recently shared that the new reasoning model, o3, is ready for the public. It passed safety testing and will soon be available as both an API and a ChatGPT model. What's interesting is that the smaller version, o3-mini, won't be exclusive to paid users. Even people using the free tier will have access to it.

OpenAI first mentioned the o3 model in December during their 12 Days of OpenAI event. At the time, Greg Brockman, the company's president, called it a major breakthrough.

The o3 model works differently than models like GPT-4 Turbo. It checks facts and reasoning before responding, which can make it slower but more accurate, especially for complex tasks like math or coding.

The o3-mini is a lighter version of o3. It's smaller than GPT-4 Turbo, so it should be faster and less demanding on computing power. This is a big change for OpenAI, as they usually limit access to their newest models. Now, even free-tier users can try out o3-mini.

Paid users will still get GPT-4 Turbo, but they'll also have more access to o3-mini. Altman didn't go into specifics, but he mentioned that higher-tier users would get additional benefits, as usual.

The company hasn't said exactly when o3 will be available to everyone, but it's clear it's coming soon. The Plus tier costs $20 a month, and the Pro tier, which offers more features, costs $200.
