Microsoft recently upgraded Bing Image Creator with a new AI model, PR16, based on OpenAI's DALL-E 3. The company promised faster image generation and better quality. But instead of praise, users flooded Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) with complaints.

Many said the new model produced images that looked less realistic, with some describing them as "cartoonish" and "lifeless." One user even declared, "The DALL-E we used to love is gone forever."

The backlash was strong enough for Microsoft to take action. Jordi Ribas, Microsoft's head of search, announced they're reverting to the previous model, PR13, while they work on fixes. However, the process will take weeks to complete.

So, what went wrong? Users noted that the new model seemed to lack the detail and polish of its predecessor. While Microsoft's internal testing found PR16 slightly better overall, it's clear their measurements didn't match user expectations.

This isn't the first time an AI update has fallen flat. Earlier this year, Google had to pause a feature in its AI chatbot Gemini after users reported problems with accuracy.

The takeaway? Measuring AI improvements in the real world isn't easy, and what works in testing doesn't always resonate with actual users.
