OpenAI has shut down a developer who created a device that could use ChatGPT to aim and fire a rifle. The device went viral after a video showed the developer giving commands to ChatGPT, which made the rifle aim and shoot at nearby walls. In the video, the developer told the system, "ChatGPT, we're under attack from the front left and front right," and the rifle quickly followed the instructions.

OpenAI responded by cutting off the developer. The company said it caught the violation and contacted the developer before the media even got involved. They are clear that using AI for weapons is against their rules. This raises concerns about AI being used to control dangerous machines, like drones or automated weapons.

AI technology can already understand audio and visual input, and critics worry it could be used to create autonomous weapons. Some drones are already being developed to strike targets on their own, without human input. This could make it harder to hold anyone accountable for mistakes or war crimes.

In fact, a recent report showed that Israel used AI to select bombing targets. Sometimes, soldiers used it with little training, leading to mistakes. Proponents argue AI could protect soldiers by keeping them out of danger, but critics think it's risky to give AI control over life-and-death decisions.

While OpenAI bans weapons use, it's worth noting they've partnered with a defense company to develop AI for defending against drones. The defense industry is big, and many tech companies see opportunities to profit from it.

Even though OpenAI blocks the use of their tools for weapons, open-source models and 3D printing make it easier than ever for anyone to create their own autonomous weapons at home.
